Don and Sondra Samuels
Larry and Jean LeJeune are dedicated supporters of Lundstrum Performing Arts and its mission. Jean was herself a student of founder Dorothy Lundstrum. In 2009, she was asked to serve on the board of directors, in which she responded that she had a better idea, and volunteered her husband, Larry. Since being nominated by Jean, Larry has served on Lundstrum’s board for over 10 years,
including three terms as Board Chair. Under Larry’s leadership, Lundstrum has expanded significantly in its scope and impact. The student body has grown from 200 to 500 students annually, and its signature facility on North 2nd Street almost doubled in size. Larry and Jean believe in family and resonate strongly with Lundstrum’s vision of artistic excellence and positive life values. The LeJeunes are proud parents of five grown children, 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The LeJeunes are proud that Lundstrum is a safe and encouraging place for students to train in dance, voice and drama. However, they believe Lundstrum provides much more than an artistic outlet; it’s a place where students see important values modeled and encouraged while developing life-long skills. The couple notes, “We have sincere admiration for the Casserly sisters’ passion and dedication to teaching the art of Broadway musical theater while integrating the values we treasure.”
Don and Sondra Samuels are pillars of the North Minneapolis community and longtime partners with Lundstrum Performing Arts. Don is the CEO of Microgrants, an organization that gives small grants to people of potential to help them fund their education, businesses and modes of transportation. Don has also served on the Minneapolis City Council and on the Minneapolis Board of Education. Sondra is the founding President and CEO of the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ), a collaborative of over 40 partner nonprofits and schools. Along with parents, students, partners, and staff, Sondra is leading a revolutionary culture shift in North Minneapolis focused on ending multigenerational poverty through education and family stability.Together, Don and Sondra co-host a radio show on KMOJ-FM, “Power to the Parents,” that shares best practices in effective parenting with black parents. They also love the Twin Cities rich theater scene, and are proud that daughter Asante studied at Lundstrum Performing Arts from 2014-2017.The Samuels and the Casserlys both share a strong commitment to faith, family and caring in North Minneapolis. Sondra recently noted,“Lundstrum helps children to know that they have talent and genius. The arts provide a unique pathway to build community and connect with kids.”
