Growing Enrollment and Expanding Spaces: Lundstrum’s New North Wing

Lundstrum signage is installed November 2024 as the finishing touch on the North Wing renovation.

Lundstrum Performing Arts thrilled to announce the opening of its North Wing - an exciting new addition to our arts campus in North Minneapolis! In January, students began using new and expanded teaching spaces adjacent to Lundstrum’s long-time studios. The North Wing includes a state of the art dance studio, vocal studio, recording studio, and staff offices.

These expanded spaces have immediately been activated to support Lundstrum’s increasing enrollment. In the last year alone, student registrations have grown by nearly 30% as we welcome new students from North Minneapolis and across the Twin Cities.

In addition to growing student numbers on-site, Lundstrum has also seen growth in its partnership programs in area schools and nonprofit agencies. To support this expansion, Lundstrum’s Office of Community Engagement is now housed in the North Wing, enabling Lundstrum to expand its connections to the broader community and collaborate in new ways to serve youth.

Lundstrum has been in its current facility at 1617 North 2nd Street since 2007, first occupying 11,000 square feet devoted to its lobby and three main studios. In 2015, the organization acquired the neighboring annex, which accommodates classes and back-stage storage, as well as hosting a gathering during Lundstrum’s annual May gala. The 2024 North Wing expansion adds over 4,600 square feet to Lundstrum’s teaching and operating spaces.

Mayor Jacob Frey attended Lundstrum’s North Wing dedication on November 21, 2024, and noted, “The atmosphere created here at Lundstrum is something that is so special. Lundstrum sees something in the young people who thrive here. Lundstrum’s North Wing expansion is making sure that even more children can learn from top professionals, and Lundstrum can reach out to every kid who wants to be creative. We know these kids will go on to do incredible things and that’s why this new facility is an amazing asset for our city.”

Lundstrum’s expanded studios and community engagement space will significantly contribute to the rich and developing ecosystem of youth support in North Minneapolis that includes nearby organizations such as Northside Achievement Zone, the V3 Center, Capri Theater, Juxtaposition Arts, and others.

Amy Ellis, Lundstrum’s Founder and Executive Director commented, “Lundstrum has always been grounded by two programmatic pillars: excellence and access. Our new North Wing addition is very exciting , it allows us to serve many  more students and collaborators. We are energized by the possibilities to inspire and develop the young talent in our community. The future is bright at Lundstrum!”
