A Villainously Fun Summer

This summer, Lundstrum is presenting a wickedly good production of Disney’s Descendants: The Musical. The show stars the teenaged children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella De Vil, who have grown up imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost. When the four troublemakers are sent to attend prep school alongside the children of beloved Disney heroes, they have a difficult choice to make: should they follow in their parents’ wicked footsteps or learn to be good?

Who's the baddest of them all”

Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Disney's Descendants: The Musical is a brand-new musical jam-packed with comedy, adventure, Disney characters, and hit songs from the films!

For four weeks, the cast has been taking musical theater technique classes in the morning, and then applying their training in afternoon rehearsals. Anyone interested in seeing Lundstrum’s students in action can see Disney’s Descendants on August 5, 6, and 7. You can purchase tickets and follow the cast’s progress on the show page. Shows are already selling out!

Directed by Kerry Casserly Carter, Lundstrum’s production will feature hip hop choreography by McKnight Fellow Herbert Johnson III and rising Northside choreographer DiShae Sanders. Both choreographers are former Lundstrum students who are excited to be back and working with the cast. “I love how the children are able to express themselves and really take their roles seriously,” DiShae said, “Seeing them on stage, lighting up and becoming confident people really excites me.”

The music in the show has been a joy and challenge for the choreographers. Herbert likes “Goal,” a number centered around winning a sports game. “My favorite part has been exploring my imagination and pairing the process with the kids. The exploration is the funnest part,” he said.

“I love the number ‘Break this Down’,” DiShae said, “because it’s when the kids really get to be themselves, come together and let loose.” The show’s musical numbers are a combination of pop and hip numbers, as well as remixes of a few classic Disney songs.

The show comes just as Lundstrum is launching its new Northside Strong Scholarship. Lundstrum’s new scholarship program ensures that students can take classes for a pay-what-you-can rate. Any student who lives in Northside, Near North, Golden Valley, Brooklyn Center or Robbinsdale is eligible to receive a scholarship that can cover up to the full cost of classes. The scholarship application is part of the program’s regular application form. Once a Northside student applies, they’ll be contacted about a specific aid amount according to their need. Lundstrum is committed to serve all students regardless of financial circumstances.
